malcolm doesn't know much about his life before he came to be a part of the devaux family. though it was always clear he didn't exactly fit in the with blonde haired and blue eyed family. he never felt like he didn't belong though. his childhood was what most would consider privileged, it helped that they had both come from their own upper class families. the devaux's were as blue blooded as you got in new orleans society and they raised quite the stink when they chose to adopted the three year old boy and his baby sister from spain. it wasn't for racial reasoning, thankfully, but more a matter of their friends not understanding why they'd adopt when they could have children of their own. already having a seven year old son by the time their family grew by two and only a couple of years later did the family grow yet again with another biological child of the couple.

he was always a bright child, though many of his teachers and tutors would have said that he was too curious for his own good. constantly found tearing things apart just for the sake of putting them back together again in either the attempt to learn how they worked. or even better, in the attempt to see if he could make whatever his experiment was work better. it took plenty of conversations with his parents before he finally realized that it was better to excell in his schooling above all else.

his teen years were considerably more rocky than most since like most, this was when he started to act out and explore who he was as an individual. and on the streets of new orleans, privileged or not, it doesn't take long to fall into the wrong crowd. by the time he was 15, he was certainly a far cry from the darling boy he'd once been. indulging in alcohol, drugs, and minor crime with his ragtag group of friends. eventually he found himself in cuffs and a quick call home was enough to chill his blood with the fact that his parents weren't going to be letting him get away with it. a court date, embarassment, and hours of community service later and he was seemingly on the more law abiding path again.

at the age of 16, the devaux family was packing up for a change of scenery for the first time in three generations. while they didn't abandon their properties in new orleans, one of which trusted to malcolm, his father received a type of offer that couldn't have been turned down. the move to chicago was troublesome for all of the devaux children. they were leaving their home and, thus far, life long friends behind for a city they knew nothing about. malcolm did well to keep on top of his schooling to ensure a future for himself but his itch to be around the less than savory flared up with a vengeance. with his father as a criminal defense attorney, he never had to look far to find what he was looking for and it only took six months since moving to the city before he fell off the proverbial wagon.

running drugs for open wasn't his ideal place on the foodchain but it served an amazing purpose of getting his foot in the door. but eventually he did make the shift to dealing, which helped ease his 'broke college kid' years at university of chicago. years that one would have assumed were spent in luxury like the rest of his life. his previous phase of acting out had come with more consequences than he'd been aware of during his community service. malcolm wasn't going to see a dime of his inheritance until he completely finished his schooling and landed an honest job. he managed both and then some. eventually branching off on his own in the ways of drug sales while also offering his talents with computers/software to the criminal organizations in the city to bring them out of the stone age.

it WAS a dangerous side job to have and he's done well enough to avoid detection thus far. not to mention the protection of larger criminal organizations is a damn good thing to have when you not only want to stay out of a jail cell but you have a legitimate day job to balance. with the birth of his daughter, his willingness to risk jail time over drug sales considerably lessened. to the point that he ended up directing all of his business to fellow dealers in the hopes of keeping his hands somewhat clean.
